House Coffee Table #1.

The first of our "House Coffee Table" Series; each made from two beautiful weeping silver birch trees from our own front yard. This table strikes an interesting balance between it's organic live edge top and a slightly more modern base with traditional japanese style hand cut joinery.

01 Origin

From trees to tables.

Five years ago we bought our house in Lander, Wyoming. Two weeping birches stood in the front yard, both well past their prime. When the time came to take them down, we found someone in town to mill the trunks into slabs rather than send the trees to the landfill. Those slabs dried in the shop for three years waiting for their second life.

This table is the first of a series of coffee tables made from those trees. Each slab is different, which challenges us to design pieces that fit the soul of the slab rather than the other way around.

We don't always get the chance to work with wood we felled and milled ourselves. Doing so made this project extra special to us.

02 Design

A nod to Nakashima.

George Nakashima was a prolific woodworker and architect from the mid-century. He had a profound respect for trees and believed it was the duty of a woodworker to honor the life of a tree by bringing out its best qualities through good design and honest craftsmanship.

This is backwards from how most products are made. Rather than going into the project with a rigid design in mind, we do our best to let the tree speak to us when considering designs best suited for each piece.
